Okay, I'm a male 23 year old. My father decided to not ever teach me about vehicles. I seriously don't know jack except how to change the tires if I have a flat, put in more windshield wiper fluid, change the wipers, and maybe other petty tasks.
Anyone know of a real good website for complete noobs? I want to know what happens to gasoline, what moves the pistons, etc.

Mechanic ripped me off! Where can I take a course to learn how to fix my own car?
Hi all...any advice on where I can take a course to fix my own car...no matter what the problem. Brakes, check engine light is on, rotors, changing tires...all of that stuff?
Do I have to take a course at a technical college or something to become a mechanic? OR can I just go to the local community college and get a quick run-through about how to repair automobiles? I do know how to do the simple stuff like, change a tire, install/remove a battery, and change the wipers...that's elementary stuff. and you have to take out the bolt that holds the linkage

You just changed it? Did it work before changing the blade? If it did make sure the wiper is not binding, turn the wiper on go to the rear of the car and see if it is moving or stuck. If there is no noise or movement you need to check the fuse and make sure it is not blown.

How do you get a windshield wiper to lock on the arm?
I need to change my windshield wipers and I just purchased some replacements. The type I have on my car is a J hook (or some call a U hook) so it should be the easiest kind. I was able to get the old wipers off, and put the new ones on and they fit fine, but they won't snap and lock into place, so I am sure they will come flying off. My child isn't 24 yet, but I would hope that by 24 he will be a college graduate, have a promising career, and living on his own. Maybe try a time line for him, not all at once, but set a time for him to find work, have him give a schedule of all the places he applied to or interviewed at. Once he's found work, set a time line for him to find a place of his own. See what his goals are in life besides watching sports and hanging with mom. Make him responsible for some of bills in order to have the privilege to watch sports all day. He'll need a job to pay bills!!!

No one should be cleaning after him, he can cook his own food, he can clean up behind himself. That's not up to his mother anymore, he needs to care for himself.

First, he needs to be told by parents it's time to get full time job too start his career. 6 months after his new job he will have a lease on an apartment or rent house. They will help him move. If he needs encouragement give it to him and let him know that he is only hurting himself by not growing up.

First, he needs to be told by parents it's time to get full time job too start his career. 6 months after his new job he will have a lease on an apartment or rent house. They will help him move. At the very least, clean your glass with straight alcohol to break down the film and then use Rain X which does indeed work well and for a long period of time.

Depends on whether you are trying to replace the entire wiper assembly or just the rubber blade itself.
Many wiper arms have a hook at the end and you push the wiper toward the base of the wiper arm instead of pulling away from it.
To get just the rubber blade out I normally use pliers to bend one of the metal tabs on either side of the blade, at the end of the blade closest to the base of the arm, and slide the support band out. The blade will almost fall out without either one of the support bands. Then you slide the replacement back in.
The easiest was is to go to Autozone, Advance Auto, etc and they'll change them for you for free.Need some help changing my windshield wipers?

Lift up the tailgate, remove the inner plastic trim (there will probably be small plastic screw covers to prise off with screws underneath) and have a look at the wiper motor. If the wires are the same colour (which they should be) then simply cut them in about the same place as the ones on the replacement you bought (or make them a little bit longer ideally) and then rejoin them once you've fitted the unit you bought.
It's easy to do just make sure you join them tightly twisting the wires together and also make sure you cover the joins in electrical tape so they don't rub together and burn the new motor out.

I need to change my windshield wiper on the driver side of my car. The rubber is literally flapping in the breeze. It's snowing outside and I need to leave in a couple hours for about a 45 minute drive. The pin stays with the wiper arm.. here's the trick.
Take a flathead screwdriver and pry it between the pin and old blade. Turn the screwdriver to pop of the old wiper from the pin. Then the new blade you just press it firmly on the pin and you're good to go.

To start off, don't buy wiper at Walmart for your VW! You actually can't anyway, because Vw blades are especially designed to fit the wiper arm. I just got some for my 2007 Jetta also. They cost 20 each, which is the price of a good wiper anyway.
As far as changing them, its really not that hard at all. The only thing that might give you trouble is actually raising them off the windshield, since they hide under the hood.
Here is what you do: put you key in the ignition, and turn it to the mode right before the car starts, then take the key out, and press down on the windshield wiper lever. This should cause the the pause half way through wiping. (instructions all found in manual. Could be under %26quot;service mode%26quot; or something like that.)
Then, life the wiper of the windshield, and push in the tiny little square on the tip of the wiper arm. After that, you can just slide the wiper blade out.

Lift the plastic cover off thats on the left. You will now see the wiper motor. All you need is ratchet set and a one of those star bits (forgot size). It should come right out.
Just install the new one, test and go.
Make sure NO ONE turns the car on while working. Otherwise, disconnect the battery before you begin. Safety First.

How ever they should slide out and the new one will slide in, make sure the width of the wipe base is the same.
At the end they should have a secure clip to avoid them of falling out the arm. good luck mate.

Even if your windshield is clean, if it hasn't been maintained, then it still has microscopic nicks and scratches in it from dust, etc. in the wind hitting it repeatedly. Run your hand over the glass. If your hand sort of %26quot;clings%26quot; to the glass and you have a hard time moving your hand across it, then you need to use a product called %26quot;Rain-X,%26quot; or something similar.
Rain-X is silicone based, kind of like a wax for windshields. It'll make your glass super-smooth by filling in all the imperfections. It should take away the noise your wiper is making, and, the rain will roll right off of your windshield.Why do my windscreen wipers make an awful noise! ?

If the cable has come adrift at the handle inside the passenger compartment, you may be able to reattach it. Or, perhaps you can grab the cable with a pair of pliers and yank on it to open the hood. Then you'll be able to access the other end of the cable and replace it. If the failure is at the hood end, check with a flashlight and a small mirror. (We use a small mirror with a swiveling, extendible handle.) Looking through the grille, you may be able to see the lever that the cable pulls on in the latch mechanism. If this is the case, try inserting a long screwdriver or other implement into the gap and tripping the latch. I've even resorted to fabricating a special tool from a piece of flat steel. Find a similar car, open the hood, and figure out how to bend the steel and then how to thread it into the latch and trip it. Practice on your example vehicle to make it easy.
Try to loosen or remove the grille to make access easier. Try not to do this where the local police might take an interest in your activities unless you have your ID and the registration handy, especially late at night.

Im 15, and Ill be 16 In June. I need to get a job and start saving for a car. I want to learn more about cars, but my school doesn't have a automotive program anymore. So I figured I could maybe make money, and learn about cars at the same time. I was thinking about AutoZone or something because I had a relative who worked there and basically said if you can change wiper blades, headlights, and use a computer your good. But I dont know if this is true or not, also I dont know how old you have to be. But anyway ya, If anyone knows any places that hire 15 year olds, and have to do with Automotive please let me know. If you go to Auto Zone they can help you to fix it. Is depending how the manufacturer designed, some has tabs some is like bayonet stile with a pin that you push in. Sorry guys this is pretty long. I was living in North Carolina at the time, flew back home to Chicago for a friend’s birthday party. I met this girl during the party in august 2006. I was 22, 5%26quot;11 270lbs - and she’s 29, gorgeous, carry’s herself very well, independent. She is the birthday girl's older cousin. I didn’t talk with her at all. Fast forward to December 2006, decided I wanted to move back to Chicago, tell all my friends to meet up for a get together. So I purchased 10 tickets for blue man group for everyone. I arrive 70lbs lighter at 200lbs in just 4 months. Shocked everybody! I didn’t invite her to the show, but one of my friends couldn’t make it, so she subbed instead. So after the show, we all have dinner at a fancy place downtown. She sits right next to me, and we start talking, laughing just having a good time. She was saying how she was almost kicked out of a strip club because she was giving her friend a lap dance, because the dancers there ignored them. She said she gives good lap dances. So I say you are going to have to show me. She laughs. So after dinner, we didn’t have any plans, so she invited all of us to her apartment for some drinks. We get a little tipsy, and I started to bring out the lap dance conversation. So she starts dancing on me, and I get a ***** almost immediately. I take my hands and pretend to put them on her chest, but not really since I wanted to respect her, so she takes my hands and puts them on her chest and moves them up and down her body. So its gets late, and I leave, but I didn’t get her number. She adds me as a friend on face book, and then wrote on my wall saying “thanks for the show handsome!” So my friend has her number, and we call her to have lunch with her one day. She asks me for my number, so we exchange numbers. A couple of weeks later, she decides to raise money for the Susan G. Komen walk. So I donate $250 to her cause. She then texted me asking me if I know someone who has had breast cancer, and I say yes. She then thanks me for my donation. Her walk is on my birthday, so I tell her it’s going to be a special day, so she responds with “I’ll be wearing pink panties then!” She calls me a couple of months later asking if I could work on her car, since I work for a dealership. I tell her no problem. So all she wants is an oil change, wiper inserts, to fix a squeaking noise, and find a bracelet that she lost, and see if she can get the car washed. I got her oil changed, replaced the wiper inserts, and her front brakes were due, so I installed new brake pads for her, I found her bracelet, and got her car detailed like it was brand new. I only charged her for parts $110. She currently is going to school and doesn’t have the money at the time, so she gives me half. I tell her, don’t worry I can wait. So it is close to her deadline for the breast cancer. She needs only $660 more to reach her goal. I donate the rest of the money anonymously on her page, but it tells her that I donated it. She calls me up at like 11:30pm, I’m asleep, and leaves a voice mail asking if I had the money to do that. I don’t call her back, but I text her saying it is for a good cause and I have plenty of money. I then proceeded to hint at ask her out, so a couple of days later I text her asking if she likes sushi, and if she knows any good sushi restaurants in the city. She responded with “yes I do and she names her favorite places” then she adds, “you’re going to have sushi without me?” Then I asked her if she wanted to have dinner with me. How to check and take care of my car before a long trip?
I am going to Florida from Texas this week (1300 miles) and taking a car which I bought recently. It's a used 2005 Hyundai Elantra with 70,000 miles. The car is generally in a good condition. I have done the following maintenance works last week.
1) Transmission fluid flush with ValvolineMax life ATF.
2) Engine oil flush with 5W 30Pennzoil
3) Brake oil flush
4) Changed all the 4 tires with Pirelli all season tires
5) A brand new battery (Duralast fromAuto zone)
6) Brake check and brake pads are good.
7) Coolant level is good and looks clean (clean light green liquid and not dirty)
I took the car to a AAA free 38 point inspection. They told that I need to change wipers, the upper and lower hoses as they are soft, and PCV valve. I tried to asked the mechanic in detail, but he was not much interested in explaining and seemed just want to get the work done.
So can anyone provide me some suggestions on anymore checkings/maintenance I should perform before the trip?

Ok, I own an 85' Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. It needs some work. Here is a list of things that it needs:
-Fix a leak in the transmission
-A New muffler and exhaust pipe
-A Tune-up
-An oil change
-Wiper blades
I'm taking it to a mechanic for everything because I don't wanna mess anything else. I need to know how much this is all going to cost before I go so I have the money. Preferably would like an actual mechanic to answer this question but anyone who knows could give me their input too.

I'm taking it to a mechanic for everything because I don't wanna mess anything else. I need to know how much this is all going to cost before I go so I have the money. Preferably would like an actual mechanic to answer this question but anyone who knows could give me their input too.

You didnt state if it was shifting rough or just possibly a bad gasket. This alone could run several hundred to a couple thousand for a new or rebuilt transmission. Muffler and exhaust about $349 parts an labor, tune up usually starts at $79 and up, oil change is about $19 and up, wiper blades are around $15 and you can put those on yourself to save on a labor charge. Try to get quotes on the phone first or take it in for an estimate before dropping it off to get worked on. There is NO way to get a %26quot;real accurate quote%26quot; without someone looking at and properly diagnosing the vehicle. Example: you have a transmission fluid leak, Is it coming from the front pump area? In that case the transmission would have to be removed to do the repair. Or is it a transmission output shaft seal that is leaking? A transmission cooler line? Big difference in parts but there is an even greater difference between each job in the labor time each takes. New muffler and exhaust pipe. Muffler and the pipe to the back or from the exhaust manifolds back?
Tune-up: does it need spark plugs only or cap %26amp; wires and spark plugs? There are two many variables!!Oldsmobile repair question?

If you still have the original Toyota wipers, then I would recommend you buy the replacement wiper blades at your local Toyota dealer. The Do It Yourself instructions are on the back of the package bec just changed the wiper inserts on my wife's Highlander. Before doing anything, take out the new Toyota replacement wiper and measure vs one being replaced to insure you have correct size and correct one. FYI the driver's side and passenger's side on genuine wipers are different lengths. The instructions will tell you how or where to press in order to slide, separate %26amp; remove the on half with the wiper blade leaving the other half of the arm that is connected to the motor at the base. You need to observe the direction and how to reinsert this half - Before you pull off the old wiper, look closely at both ends bec they are different...one has notch. Inside there is a metal strip, one goes on each side and you will find this white plastic device to hold the wiper in place as you slide one end through tracks until it snaps into the notch. If you didn't do it right, the try aligning it again and slowly pull the wiper through each gate of the arm.... Then you can do the passenger's side...

How do you change your windshield wipers? Do you need to look for a specific type?
Most wiper arms from the pivot point upward today have a U shaped 180 degree hook on the end. It's always easier if you sit behind the wheel with your wipers operating in the slow position. Time the wiper blades at or near the longest end upward of their stroke. Quickly turn off the ignition system. Your goal is to park the blades as close to the fully swept position as you can. It's the easiest position to remove the blade and blade frame. Lift the blade fully off the windshield. If you look closely, there is a button beneath the steel flat blade arm at the very end This button is at the very center of the blade but underneath the steel arm. The darn slider button is small but it must be slid toward the bottom of the windshield less than 1/8 of an inch. At the same time with the button is pushed down pull the wiper blade toward the piviot point of the wiper arm. The entire blade and frame slides downward and off.
Do the reverse when installing the new blades. Make sure the bayonet in the center of the new blade is pointing toward you then slide it on the steel wiper arm with the center plastic bayonet facing the base of the windshield. The blade and frame slides straight on the U shaped hook, no button to press untill it's time to change them again.

You one please tell me how to change the wiper motor on my 94 麓C220 Merceds. I just stopped working. Fuses are ok, Screenwash still works. Motor seems to be blocked or broken. After 2 weeks not moving the car the wiper moved 2 cm when switched on - then dead again! I don麓t need advice that I should go to a mechanic - thanks, thats the backup plan. ......You will have to start doing a process of elimination. Take the motor off and take two wires one negative and the other positive from the battery and test against the motor. If it moves freely then the motor is good. But my guess is that the motor is packing up.. Inside it has carbon brushes and I think these have worn down. Its very difficult to buy these brushes. Why do my windshield wipers on my car always make noise?
It seems every time I put on my wipers, they make noise. Even after changing the wiper blades. Is it what I am using to clean my windshield?
When it rains real hard or consistantly I dont get the noise, just when it is drizzling or when I get road wash from other cars, little bits of rain or water.

The noise is caused by the friction of the rubber against the glass, therefore when there is more water for lubrication, there is less friction and therefore less noise.
On the issue of newer cars not making the noise even with little or no water, that has to do with the fact that their windshield glass is new and smooth. With the smooth glass, the small amount of water is spread evenly across the glass, providing even lubrication. With an older windshield, there are scratches and knicks in the glass, giving the water a place to go and therefore not providing as much lubrication. When there is enough water (heavy rain, etc), the lubrication is there, and the noise stops.
The best chance of stopping this is to get a new windshield. However, as that is likely not a viable option, you can try the same method that one would use to remove scratches and smooth out their paint job...polish and wax.

Just change them annually. I normally do it at the first of September in my area, that is about when out rain season starts.
If you are living in a place like the PNW, (Pacific North West), Portland, Oregon or Seattle, Washington; I would say change those wiper blades out as soon as they start streaking the window.
