This morning my 2001 Ford Tauras starter went out. A couple of days ago it took 2-3 times to start for my husband. Then this morning it just wouldn't start at all. The radio works, windshield wipers, etc. so we don't think it's the battery. Just wondering if anyone knows if this is an easy fix to do yourself and what the best options are of buying a new starter. Thank you!How to change a Bad Starter?
If the starter turns the engine over, it's not bad. If not, It could be the battery or the charging system. Make sure your battery terminal connections are clean. How to change a Bad Starter?
if your asking the question you should not be changing the starter yourself get a mechanicHow to change a Bad Starter?
I would begin by taking it to a 12 step meeting.
OK, really. You can get a book from the auto parts store for your year and make and model of car for only $20. It will have step by step instructions for your car. While the operation is fairly straight forward, there are some cars that just want to be different, and difficult. Having the exact instructions for your car is a must. After removing the starter, take it to the auto parts store and have them check it first, before replacing the whole thing. It may just be the solonoid (Fancy word for a big relay on the side of the starter) and not the starter motor itself. That could save you as much as $195 by only replacing the damaged part, and not the whole thing. How to change a Bad Starter?
Measure the battery voltage during start. If it drops significantly (under 6 volts), it's a bad battery or a bad alternator (or bad wiring to the alternator).
If it is a bad starter, you disconnect the ground lead of the battery (to keep from welding yourself to the car). then disconnect the wires on the starter, remove the starter (a few bolts, but they're tough to get started), install the new starter, replace the wires, and replace the battery wire. 5 minutes if you know what you're doing, maybe 20 if you don't.
Careful - the starter is kind of heavy. Not something you can't hold in one hand, but it can break bones if it falls on your hand.
